The wonderful world of pyrography...
Pyrography is the art of decorating wooden objects by burning designs into the wood using
a heated point. Subtle effects can create a picture in sepia tones, or strong dark strokes
can make a bold, dramatic design. It is also know as pokerwork or wood burning.
What Can You Do With Pyrography?
There is really no limit as to what can be used as a subject matter. Portraits, people, nature, animals,
scenery, birds, cars, you name it. Both colour and monochrome pictures can be depicted on wood.
Commissions
If you would like me to make a piece specially for you, I can be contacted via email or you can fill out this brief
commission form and email it. This is merely an enquiry process and you are under no obligation what so ever.
I can also work from your photographs or images. Photos must be clear and large enough for me to figure out all
the details. If you send me a photo, I will scan it and return the original to you.
Digital image are preferred and it is helpful if they are at 300dpi or higher.
Woods Used in Pyrography
A variety of woods are usable - including basswood, plywood, poplar, burl, pine, cedar etc. One thing to be aware
of is if the wood has lots of sap wood, like pine. When the heated pen crosses the sap line the sap, even though
the wood is 'dry', goes poof! This makes it very hard to get a consistant line of shade value on woods like that.
I try to avoid using pine if at all possible. But it is certainly usable, I just don't like it all that much.
